PINKALICIOUS, THE MUSICAL, now in its fourth year Off-Broadway in New York City, began at Vital Theatre Company's home theatre at 76th Street and Broadway. After completing its initial sold-out six week run, it moved to the Soho Playhouse where it enjoyed an extended run through the summer of 2007. In January of 2008, the production re-opened at midtown's New World Stages, where it ran through September of 2008. In November of 2008 the production moved to the Bleecker Street Theatre at 45 Bleecker where it has settled into an open-ended run in the 240-seat theatre. In October 2009 PINKALICIOUS opened its first Canadian production at the Richmond Hill Centre for the Performing Arts where it had a sold out run through March 2010.
The production, with book and lyrics by ELIZABETH KANN and VICTORIA KANN, and music, lyrics and orchestrations by JOHN GREGOR, is based on the popular children's book PINKALICIOUS by Elizabeth Kann and Victoria Kann. The musical adaptation is directed by TERESA K. POND with original choreography by DAX VALDES, additional choreography by SHARON LINDSAY, music direction by MEGAN DAVIS, stage management by KATARZYNA MISZTAL, produced by CARRIE LIBLING, set by GRAHAM MAXWELL, costumes by CHERIE CUNNINGHAM, props by TERALYN BRUKETTA and original direction by SUZU MCCONNELL-WOOD.
JOHN GREGOR (Lyricist, Composer and Orchestrator) received a 2004 Frederick Loewe Award for his musical WITH GLEE, for which he wrote the book, music and lyrics. WITH GLEE was presented in a workshop by the Skirball Center for the Performing Arts, NYU, and premiered at the New York Musical Theatre Festival. His musical adaptation of Gogol's tragicomic short story THE OVERCOAT has been presented in London at the Bridewell Theatre, and at the Barrington Stage Company and The New York International Fringe Festival. He has also co-written several children's musicals for Vital Theatre Company, including THE CHANGELING and THE BULLY.
ELIZABETH KANN & VICTORIA KANN (Book & Lyrics) are co-authors of the New York Times best-selling children's picture books PINKALICIOUS (HarperCollins, 2006) and PURPLICIOUS (HarperCollins, 2007) that Victoria also illustrated. Elizabeth and Victoria are sisters who grew up in Brooklyn, New York. Victoria's award-winning artwork has graced the covers and pages of many magazines, newspapers, and books. TERESA K. POND (Director) has directed several Off-Broadway shows including, PINKALICIOUS, THE MUSICAL (extended run) in New York City and the international premiere production in Toronto; and premiere productions and readings with The Women’s Project Theatre. Ms. Pond's other New York credits include NYC Fringe Festival award-winning premiere HALF LIFE. Among her regional credits are MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING (Loft Theatre, NY), MACBETH (L.A. Times review), TARTUFFE (Studio Theatre, CA). THE CLEAN HOUSE, NICKEL AND DIMED (Western Stage, CA); THE FOREIGNER, PERFECT WEDDING (Millbrook Theatre, PA); SYLVIA, SHAKESPEARE IN HOLLYWOOD (Cyrano’s Theatre, AK); and productions at NYU and Stella Adler Conservatory. Ms. Pond has also directed several operas, including: SUOR ANGELICA, PAGLIACCI (Anchorage Opera), BARBER OF SEVILLE (Bleecker Street Opera), AMAHL AND THE NIGHT VISITORS. She is a member of The Lincoln Center Directors’ Lab, The Women’s Project Directors Forum, and co-leader of the NYC playwright-director company NewShoe. Current productions include: CAROLINE OR CHANGE (Cyrano’s Theatre, AK) and RICHARD III with New York Classical Theatre in Central Park. She is also proud member of Stage Directors and Choreographers Society (SDC).
MEGAN DAVIS (Music Director) had her first taste of musical directing while at the University of Toronto in 1992 after spending her formative years on stage. Megan is now the Co-Owner and Musical Director of CharActors Theatre Troupe, a performing arts school for students grades 1 to 12. She is also the Co-Artistic Director of York Regions Premier Youth Theatre Company, City Youth Players. Combining her love of theatre, music and teaching Megan is a guest musical theatre teacher at Baythorn Arts Elementary School and Westmount High School. Favorite musical direction credits include: ONCE ON THIS ISLAND, URINETOWN, MOBY DICK THE MUSICAL, THE WIZ and THE ADVENTURES OF TOM SAWYER.
SHARON LINDSAY (Additional Choreography) has been teaching and choreographing at The Woodbridge School of Dance since 1999, and is currently its Department Head of Musical Theatre. In addition to her teaching, she has worked as a choreographer for CharActors Theatre Troupe for over 10 years. She received her dance training in Toronto studying Jazz, Tap, Acrobatics and Ballet, and has won many awards at local and North American competitions. Ms. Lindsay holds a teaching membership with the British Association of Teachers of Dance. As a choreographer, Ms. Lindsay has prepared such projects as Ricky’s Room, a PBS children’s show, and the musicals HONK and INTO THE WOODS for City Youth Players. Her other credits include A CHORUS LINE, SWEET CHARITY, and URINETOWN. She is thrilled to have been a part of the first Canadian Production of PINKALICIOUS, and looks forward to bringing the show downtown.
The cast includes CAITLYNNE MEDREK, ARTHUR WRIGHT, KIMBERLY PERSONA, DANIEL BIRNBAUM, MEAGHAN CHAPIN, JUSTINE MORITZ and JEAN-FRANCOIS GRENIER.
VITAL THEATRE COMPANY commissions four to five new musicals for children each season. Since its founding in 1999, Vital Theatre Company has been honored with two AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE by the Off Off Broadway Review and received high acclaim from audiences and critics alike for being "a wonderful place for parents to introduce their kids to the glories of live theatre, done well and at modest prices." Now in its 11th season, the company is dedicated to producing entertaining and educational theatre for young audiences. To date, the company has presented 49 original productions for over 156,000 children and their families.
