With the exception of Leni Riefenstahl, no German director was as bound up in the machinations of the Nazi party as Veit Harlan. His propaganda films (including 1940's notorious Jew Suss) endeared him to Goebbels - and led to his later trial for crimes against humanity. Felix Moeller's acclaimed documentary is at once a profile piece on Harlan, a history lesson about a crucial and shameful period in German cinema, and a meditation on cinema's power to harm.
